Planning a road trip!

It has been quite some time since Kristen and I took a vacation together. Recently we decided that we were going to take steps towards taking a road trip somewhere early this summer. Well, this weekend we made it official and booked hotel rooms in Boston, MA. We’ve been wanting to visit the New England states for several years so this seemed like a prime opportunity to do so. We’re planning to drive to Boston, stay for a few days and then drive up to Maine. It’s going to be a great time!

We’re going to be staying at the Hotel Commonwealth while we’re in Boston and we’re really looking forward to it. I’ve been using Google Earth to find out what stores/restaurants/attractions are within walking distance of the hotel so we can find things to do without driving around. We are planning to drive around town but I’d like to take advantage of the nearby attractions as much as possible as to avoid the traffic. The hotel is less than a block away from Fenway Park and there just happens to be a home game against San Francisco the day we arrive, that should be fun. 🙂

We’re really looking forward to visiting lots of museums, great seafood restaurants as well as historical sites. I’m sure that my camera will get a workout. We’re planning to leave towards the end of June and we’ll be gone for around a week.

Check out the North End — that’s the Italian part of town with open window shops and wonderful Italian specialties! The Old North Church is right in that neighborhood.
If you have time and a car, go up the coast too, as the little New England towns are quite nice. Enjoy and consider writing a travelogue. 🙂

Go to Newport, Rhode Island while you’re up there. It is only an hour or 2 south of Boston It’s a great laid back town by the sea that is outstanding!!!!! If you want wonderful Italian food go to Providence, Rhode Island, Federal Hill is nothing but great Italian restaurants. Andino’s is highly recommended. It has the mobster feel to it:) I would love to live in the northeast (especially Rhode Island) You’ll have a great time

In Maine, on the coast, Acadia National Park is gorgeous, and very walkable. Nearby towns worth visiting include Blue Hill, a small artsy community, and if you’re considering staying in Maine for a day or two, an old inn in Surry, Maine is great: http://www.surryinn.com/
It’s an old farmhouse, on a saltwater inlet, with a great restaurant. I’d live there if I could!
    Have a great trip!

If you are at Hotel Commonwealth, park the car and forget about it. Driving in Boston is crazy, and the subway is pretty darn good.
You will be right on the subway line, and right around the corner from Fenway Park. I would suggest:
Walk over to Fenway and take a tour.
Take green line to red line and visit Harvard Square. MIT is kind of interesting too if you walk the campus. Good restaurants and music in the square too.
The north end was a good recommendation
Fanieul Hall is touristy, but still a good place to see. While there, visiting the shopping district – Washington Street – is a common activity. Also, the Freedom Trail passes thru there, but the entire thing is pretty long.
Newberry Street has lots of fancy stores, some people enjoy walking that down to the Boston Common.
Regarding Maine, I agree about Acadia, but that is a major league haul. for a couple of days, I would shoot for the southern coast. Damerscotta is a fabulous place to visit, for instance.
Lastly, if you like like music, Johnny D’s in Davis Square is darn good. It’s right on the red line, but not many tourists will discover Davis Square or Johnny D’s. Davis Square has been called the Paris of America. I don’t know about that, but it’s a hip area. There are also several good irish pubs and several good restauraunts.
    Have fun!
