Getting ready for a road trip

Our plans have changed and rather than going to the New England area for our vacation, which is coming up one week from today, we’re going to take a road trip up to the Niagara Falls/Northern New York area. We’ve been trying to keep the planning to a minimum in hopes that this will be the most laid back and stress-free vacation we’ve ever taken. We know we’re driving and we know we’re going to see Niagara Falls, but other than that it’s up in the air. We’re leaving very early Saturday morning and are driving to New York, making any stops along the way to take in the scenery and any sites that might present themselves along the way.

I’ve been looking over the route on Google Earth and I feel very comfortable, as if I’ve made the drive in the past. Gotta love Google Earth. I spent most of this morning getting the car all cleaned up and prepared for the trip so hopefully we won’t mind spending so much time inside of it. I’ve always wanted to take a road trip and have never really had the opportunity until now, and I can’t wait.

So, do any of you have any ideas/suggestions of places we should see in the Niagara/Buffalo/Northern New York area? We’d love suggestions. I’m also planning to take my laptop and take LOTS of pictures so if we have internet access I may be posting some entries or photos along the way. Stay tuned!

yes, the finger lakes region of NY state is beautiful this time of year . . . there are many wineries around seneca and cayuga lakes if you’re interested in that kind of thing but if not, it’s just so great for driving around and seeing the water. also, the adirondack mountains are only a couple of hours from there and there is a ton to see . . . if you like easy hiking, kayaking, camping the adirondacks might be a place to check out, too. old forge, lake placid, saranac lake, etc. i live in CA now, but grew up in NY state and miss it! have fun! good luck!

I agree completely with Abby about seeing the finger lakes. When I was at Purdue (I graduated in 2002 also), I interned with IBM in Burlington, VT and took a fun road trip out there. I went from Purdue, through Detroit, into Canada, to Montreal, then the Adirondacks (finger lakes), then took the ferry across Lake Champlain into Burlington. Burlington is a delightful town and there are gorgeous places all around it. On my trip back to Purdue, I drove through NH, stopping off at Dartmouth and briefly in Manchester on my way to Boston. I stayed in Boston a couple of days before heading to Newport, RI. I LOVE Newport. It’s really old, and is a great sailing town. The scenery is amazing. After RI, I drove to New Haven to take the Acela train into NY. The Acela is really neat and you can see NY without dealing with the traffic and obscene parking. I would also try to avoid parking in central Boston because it is more than $20 per hour. After NY, the trip was much less interesting… I went straight across PA (although you could stop in Philadelphia), made a wrong turn into West Virginia, and visited my Grandma in Columbus before heading back to school. Its hard to pick a favorite spot, Montreal is amazing, Burlington is awesome, and so is Boston. I spent a fair amount of time in Newport as a child, and have fond memories of that. You are going to have a great time!
